PARENTS IN POWAY, ENCINITAS, CARLSBAD, CARMEL VALLEY, SCRIPPS RANCH, SOLANA BEACH, RANCHO BERNARDO AND RANCHO SANTA FE: Raising Drug Free Kids is More Difficult when Faced with Marital Problems or Divorce.
A study on adolescent health reveals that teens who parents have divorced are four times more likely to use drugs than teens whose parental relationships are intact.
The NIMI (National Institute of Mental Health) funded scientists revealed that the prevalence of mental disorders (depression, drug and alcohol use, sexual promiscuity) decreased by more than 50% when families were involved in a program to:
• improve communication skills
• resolve destructive alliances
• develop effective and cooperative co-parenting skills
When untreated, the negative impact often persists into adulthood, resulting in nearly twice the normal prevalence of mental health problems and impaired educational attainment, socioeconomic and family well-being. For audio information on the topic of Teen Substance Use.
Addiction prevention includes:
1. Consultation with a licensed marriage, family therapist or psychotherapist who understands family systems and recognizes the impact on youth developmental stages.
2. Effective planning a preparation to let the children know of your decision.
3. Adults make the financial and living arrangement decisions. Children and teens have enough to attend to with school and their own difficult developmental stages.
4. Acknowledge the grief experienced by your children.
5. Don’t triangle your children in your marriage troubles. Don’t get them to take sides with you against the other parent.
6. Speak to other adults about your adult problems, do not blame or criticize the other parent, to them or in front of them. You may be angry at your partner, but it is still the only mother or father your child has, and their relationship is different than yours.
If your marriage is not going well, get help from a marriage counselor through the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, , or to your Employee Assistance Program in your workplace, or to your Pastor, Priest or Rabbi.
